Indian badminton star Lakshya Sen has reached the men's singles final of the Australian Open Super 500 after a hard-fought victory against world No. 6 Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei. The semifinal on Saturday lasted 86 minutes, with Lakshya recovering from a first-game loss to win 17-21, 24-22, 21-16. This marks another milestone for the 24-year-old, who won bronze at the 2021 World Championships and has been showing consistent form this year. He will now face either Japan’s Yushi Tanaka or Chinese Taipei’s fifth seed Lin Chun-Yi in the final on Sunday.
The match began with Chou dominating rallies and showcasing his precision. Lakshya struggled initially, allowing Chou to take an 11-6 lead at the mid-game interval. Chou’s aggressive attacks pushed him to a 14-7 lead, while Lakshya tried to respond with deep smashes and defensive shots. Despite his efforts, Chou secured the first game at 21-17 after a long 44-shot rally.
In the second game, Lakshya adjusted his strategy and showed excellent mental toughness. Both players exchanged points early, but Lakshya began to pressure Chou, exploiting errors and softening his attacks. At 11-9, Lakshya took the lead with a fine net shot. The match remained tight, with Chou saving match points and fighting back to level the score multiple times. Lakshya eventually managed to secure the second game 24-22 after an intense net duel, forcing the decider.
The final game saw a clear shift as Lakshya’s stamina and agility became an advantage over the 35-year-old Chou. Lakshya quickly raced to a 6-1 lead, improving his length, footwork, and net game. Chou’s precision began to falter, and Lakshya extended his lead to 11-6 by the interval. He continued to dominate with sharp smashes and aggressive placements, eventually taking a 17-9 lead. Chou saved a few match points but made crucial errors under pressure. Lakshya finally sealed the match 21-16, completing an impressive comeback.
This win highlights Lakshya’s growing resilience and ability to stay focused under pressure. After reaching the Hong Kong Open final earlier this year, he has been aiming for his first title of the season. The victory against Chou, a top seed, boosts his confidence and demonstrates his potential to compete at the highest level.
Lakshya’s performance also underscores his tactical adaptability. By adjusting his game plan mid-match, controlling the tempo, and exploiting his opponent’s weaknesses, he showcased the qualities of a world-class player. Fans and experts alike praised his mental toughness, endurance, and precise shot-making throughout the semifinal.
With the final looming, all eyes will be on Lakshya as he attempts to secure the Australian Open Super 500 title. A win would be a significant achievement, adding to his growing list of international accolades and further establishing him as one of India’s leading badminton stars.
