Central Vietnam is grappling with its worst flooding and landslides in weeks, with at least 90 people confirmed dead after heavy rains swept through the region earlier this week. Entire villages have been submerged, major highways blocked, and railway lines disrupted, leaving thousands stranded.
The deluge has compounded an already dire situation caused by earlier record rainfall and Typhoon Kalmaegi, which left communities struggling to recover. In the Central Highlands, landslides triggered by relentless rain have torn through roads, making travel impossible and slowing relief efforts.
Emergency teams are battling challenging conditions to reach affected areas. Reports indicate that many homes have been destroyed, crops washed away, and electricity and communication lines damaged, further isolating residents in remote communities. Local hospitals are stretched thin as they respond to injuries and urgent medical needs.
Vietnam, one of the world’s most flood-prone nations, sees nearly half its population living in high-risk zones. Scientists have long warned that climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of storms across Southeast Asia, turning seasonal rains into deadly torrents.
Communities are now bracing for continued rainfall as authorities continue rescue operations, and the government urges residents to stay indoors and avoid traveling on flooded routes.
