The Indian cricket team has announced an important change for the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa. Senior batter KL Rahul has been selected as the new captain for the series. This change became necessary because regular captain Shubman Gill is recovering from a neck injury. Gill suffered this injury during the first Test match against South Africa in Kolkata and has been ruled out of the ODI series. The selectors chose Rahul only for this short-term role, focusing mainly on the three upcoming matches.
A board source explained that Rahul’s captaincy should be seen only for this particular series. It is not a permanent change. Rishabh Pant, normally considered for leadership roles, was not selected as captain because he has played just one ODI in the past year. The board expects Shubman Gill to recover soon and return for India’s next ODI assignment against New Zealand in January 2026. The ODI series against South Africa will take place on November 30 in Ranchi, followed by matches in Raipur on December 3 and Visakhapatnam on December 6.
Another major highlight is the return of star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who has been away from white-ball cricket for almost eight months. Jadeja last played an ODI in March during the Champions Trophy final in Dubai. He has been selected mainly because all-rounder Axar Patel is being rested for this series. Jadeja also played in the recent Test match against South Africa at Eden Gardens, where he was part of India’s strong spin attack.
Some senior players will not feature in this ODI series as part of workload management. Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who recently played several important matches including Tests and T20Is, has been given rest. Bumrah last played an ODI in the 2023 World Cup final. Similarly, Mohammed Siraj has also been rested after playing tough Test matches in Kolkata and Guwahati. Axar Patel, who was part of India’s white-ball tour to Australia, will also sit out this series. These players’ rest periods are important to ensure they remain fit for future tournaments.
This series could give young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal another chance in ODI cricket. Jaiswal was part of the squad against Australia but did not get to play. He may now open the innings with Rohit Sharma. Virat Kohli, who has retired from Tests and T20Is but continues in ODIs, is also included. Fans will once again get to watch the famous Rohit-Kohli combination.
Ruturaj Gaikwad has also made a comeback to the ODI squad. He performed very well in the recent unofficial ODI series for India A against South Africa A, scoring 117, 68*, and 25 in three matches. With Shubman Gill and vice-captain Shreyas Iyer recovering from injuries, Gaikwad has earned his place in the squad. This series could give him more opportunities to prove his talent in the 50-over format.
With the seniors resting, India’s pace attack will be led by younger bowlers. Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, and all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy will handle the fast-bowling responsibilities. The spin options include Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar, and Jadeja, giving India a balanced bowling group for different pitch conditions.
The full squad for India’s ODI series includes Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, KL Rahul (captain & wicketkeeper), Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper), Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh, and Dhruv Jurel.
This ODI series will be important for India as they test a mix of senior players and young talent. With Rahul as captain and Jadeja returning, the team hopes to perform well despite the absence of star players like Gill, Bumrah, and Siraj. Fans are excited to see how this updated squad performs in South Africa.
