Dubai has once again broken records in the tourism sector, welcoming 18.72 million international visitors in 2024. This is a 9% increase from the 17.15 million visitors recorded in 2023, according to the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET). This marks another successful year for Dubai as one of the top travel destinations in the world.
Dubai’s Crown Prince, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, credited this success to the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. He said that Dubai’s tourism growth is part of a bigger plan under the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, which aims to make the city a leading hub for business and leisure while enhancing its status as one of the best places to visit, live, and work.
“This achievement is a result of strong leadership and teamwork between the government and private sectors. We are focused on maintaining this momentum by improving infrastructure, attracting skilled professionals, and diversifying the market. Dubai will continue to grow as a top global destination,” Sheikh Hamdan said. He also highlighted that Dubai’s efforts to bring in foreign investment and talent will play a key role in sustaining this growth.
What Helped Dubai Achieve This Success?
Several factors contributed to Dubai’s impressive tourism numbers in 2024. The city launched global marketing campaigns, hosted major events, and worked closely with businesses in the tourism sector. The DET played a crucial role by forming partnerships with international stakeholders and promoting Dubai’s attractions across more than 60 countries.

Dubai’s strategic location also makes it an attractive destination for travelers. The highest visitor growth was recorded from North East and South East Asia (24%), followed by Africa (20%), CIS and Eastern Europe (16%), and Western Europe (14%).
Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of DET, praised Dubai’s leadership for helping the city overcome global challenges and continue its growth. He said, “Dubai has managed to navigate economic and geopolitical uncertainties with smart planning. This growth is not just a short-term success but part of a long-term plan to strengthen Dubai’s economy, attract investments, and make the city a leading global hub.”
Dubai’s Hotels and Hospitality Sector
Dubai’s hotel industry has also played a major role in boosting tourism. By the end of 2024, the city had 154,016 hotel rooms across 832 establishments, an increase from 150,291 rooms in 821 hotels in 2023. New luxury hotels, such as One&Only One Za’abeel, SIRO One Za’abeel, and The Lana Dorchester Collection, attracted high-end travelers.
Dubai’s hotels saw an average occupancy rate of 78.2%, which was higher than the 77.4% recorded in 2023. The city’s hotels performed better than those in New York, Bangkok, Paris, and Singapore and were almost at the same level as London. The demand for Dubai’s hotels is expected to grow further with upcoming projects like Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab and Mandarin Oriental Downtown.
Issam Kazim, CEO of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing, said, “Dubai’s tourism success is due to the dedication of our partners and the guidance of our leaders. Our goal is to keep raising the standards of service and continue to surprise visitors with unique experiences.”
Big Events and International Recognition
Dubai’s event calendar in 2024 played a big role in attracting tourists. The Dubai Fitness Challenge saw 2.7 million participants, the highest ever. Other major events, like the Dubai Shopping Festival, Gulfood, GITEX Global, and Arabian Travel Market, brought in thousands of visitors. Dubai also secured the hosting of 437 future business events, which will bring over 210,000 international delegates to the city in the coming years.
The city has also received global recognition. It was ranked the number one destination for foreign direct investment (FDI) in tourism for the first half of 2024. The city’s airport, DXB, remained the world’s busiest international airport, welcoming 92.3 million guests in 2024. Dubai was also ranked as one of the safest cities in the world, and it retained the number one spot for cleanliness globally.
Future Plans for Dubai’s Tourism
Dubai is working on major infrastructure projects to support future growth. The expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), which will be the world’s largest airport, is expected to increase Dubai’s capacity to handle 260 million passengers per year. The city is also improving public transport with the Dubai Metro’s Blue Line extension, which will serve about one million people.
Dubai’s government is also focusing on making the city more accessible and inclusive. Dubai College of Tourism launched the Middle East’s first apprenticeship in Culinary Operations in 2024 to train future chefs. The city is also working to become the first Certified Autism Destination in the Eastern Hemisphere, making its tourist attractions more accessible to people of determination.
Dubai’s food scene continues to shine, with the MICHELIN Guide featuring 106 restaurants in its 2024 edition. The city also hosted The Best Chef Awards for the first time in the Middle East, celebrating its growing reputation as a global culinary hub.
