Dubai has unveiled a comprehensive long-term strategy designed to enhance its sports sector and fortify its international presence. The Dubai Sports Sector Strategic Plan 2033, revealed by H.H. Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, aspires to establish Dubai as a leading global hub for sports, events, and athletic excellence.
A significant objective of this initiative is to amplify the number of premier sports events hosted annually in Dubai. The aim is to add 250 major events, attracting millions of global spectators and participants. Furthermore, the plan envisions drawing over 4 million attendees annually to Dubai's top-notch stadiums and athletic facilities, which have already helped define the city as a prominent sports destination.
This new strategy is anchored on four core pillars: sporting events, sports clubs, talent development, and community engagement. The Dubai Sports Council is committed to nurturing these areas to help the emirate rank among the top 10 sports cities in the world. Under this framework, Dubai plans to enhance its capacity to host international spectacles, nurture gifted athletes, and promote wider community participation in sports.
Alongside the plan, Dubai's fresh sports identity has been unveiled, encapsulated in a new logo that signifies the emirate’s aspirations and dedication to enhancing the quality of life for residents, sports enthusiasts, and visitors. This branding will be utilized globally to market Dubai as a vibrant and modern sports locale.
A key emphasis of this strategic initiative is the anticipated economic and tourism growth linked to significant events. Dubai expects its sports economy to expand by 80%, with contributions to the GDP projected to exceed AED 18.3 billion by 2033. The growth will arise from hosting premier sports occasions, attracting renowned athletes, and boosting international tourism.
Khalfan Juma Belhoul, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, noted that the council plans to implement 19 principal programs and 75 initiatives to achieve these objectives. These initiatives will enhance event development, athlete training, community sports engagement, and forge partnerships with global sports organizations.
Belhoul emphasized that Dubai will intensify its focus on hosting international sporting events in the coming years, covering popular sports such as football, cricket, golf, basketball, tennis, and rugby. The city will also enhance established events that draw significant international attention, including the Dubai Marathon, the Intercontinental Beach Soccer Cup, and the Professional Football League.
A highlight of the forthcoming calendar includes the World Sports Summit slated for December, which is expected to be one of the largest global congregations of sports figures, experts, and leaders. The summit aims to explore the future landscape of sports and reinforce Dubai’s title as the “City of the Future.”
To aid these initiatives, Dubai plans to upgrade its sports infrastructure, enhance accessibility, and leverage advanced technology to elevate the event experience and enhance global connectivity. Dubai Tourism will collaborate with international partners to position the city as a prime sports travel hub.
By 2033, Dubai aspires to be a central hub for sports tourism, substantial investments, and cutting-edge sports projects. This comprehensive plan aims to unearth new avenues for athletes, teams, investors, and sports fans from around the world, solidifying Dubai’s foothold as a preeminent sports destination.
