The Toronto Police Service is reaching out to the community for assistance in identifying two individuals linked to an assault in the Church-Wellesley Village area.
This incident occurred just after midnight on Saturday, around 12:22 a.m., at the intersection of Church Street and Alexander Street. Reports indicate that as the victim walked through the area, a vehicle passed him by, with two passengers allegedly shouting a homophobic slur.
Following this, the suspects exited their vehicle and pursued the victim, physically assaulting him before fleeing the scene in a dark sedan. Details surrounding the victim's condition remain unclear, but law enforcement is taking this matter extremely seriously.
The investigation is spearheaded by the Hate Crime Unit, which is examining the case due to the discriminatory language used prior to the attack. Authorities prioritize such incidents as they pose a threat to individuals based on their identity.
Descriptions of the suspects have been made public. The first suspect is characterized as a white male, approximately six feet tall, slim, and clad in all-black attire including a ski mask. The second suspect is also a white male, around five feet nine inches tall, with a similar build, wearing black clothing and a ski mask.
Law enforcement is urging anyone who might have seen the incident or possesses any information, including local video footage, to step forward, stressing that even minor details could be pivotal in identifying the assailants.
Evan Solomon, the Member of Parliament for Toronto Centre, expressed his outrage regarding the assault, affirming that no individual should endure violence or discrimination based on their identity. He advocated for continued efforts to ensure safety and respect for all community members.
The Church-Wellesley area, known as “The Village,” stands as a beacon of inclusion and support for the 2SLGBTQI+ community. This distressing incident has sparked debates about safety and the necessity for heightened awareness and action against hate crimes.
Investigations are ongoing as authorities persist in their search for the involved suspects.
