DP World has taken a big step forward in developing the Banana Port in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The global trade and logistics company has chosen Mota-Engil, a well-known construction company, to lead the project. This partnership is a major milestone to strengthen the DRC’s position as a key trade hub in Africa.
The Banana Port project is expected to change the way trade happens in the country. It will introduce modern infrastructure, lower business costs, and help the DRC become more economically independent. The port is located in Kongo Central province, along the Atlantic coast. It will serve as the country’s main gateway for containerized cargo, making trade faster and more efficient. All customs and administrative work will be managed in one place, giving the government better control over foreign trade operations.

The port will be built in phases. In the first phase, there will be a 600-meter-long quay that can handle the world’s largest ships. It will have the capacity to process 450,000 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) per year and will include 30 hectares of storage space. The second phase will expand the quay wall by more than two kilometers, making room for even more cargo. DP World is investing heavily in this project, with support from British International Investment (BII), the UK’s development finance institution.
The construction of the port will create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, benefiting local businesses and workers in the DRC. It will also make transport cheaper, improve trade efficiency, and support local industries such as agriculture and manufacturing. The port will play a key role in boosting economic growth in the region.
Mota-Engil, the company leading the construction, has vast experience in building large infrastructure projects. The company has worked on major transportation and logistics developments across Africa. Its expertise in port development will ensure that the Banana Port is built to the highest standards. Mota-Engil is known for its innovative and sustainable approach, making it a perfect partner for DP World in this ambitious project.
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, the Chairman and CEO of DP World, highlighted the importance of the Banana Port. He stated, “This project will change the trade and logistics sector in the DRC. By working with Mota-Engil, we will ensure that the port meets international standards, helps grow the economy, and creates new job opportunities for the Congolese people. Our commitment is to deliver a world-class port that will support the country’s progress for generations.”
With this partnership, DP World is reaffirming its commitment to developing world-class infrastructure in the DRC. The Banana Port will play a vital role in the country’s future, bringing economic growth and improving the lives of millions of people.
