The investigation into the devastating blast in Delhi last Monday has centered on four doctors affiliated with Al Falah University in Faridabad, approximately 45 km from the national capital. Authorities have linked the suspects to the Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammad, while the university maintains it had no connection to their alleged actions.
The explosion, which occurred near Red Fort Metro Station, killed at least 13 people. DNA tests confirmed Dr. Umar Mohammad as the driver of the Hyundai i20 used in the blast. Three other doctors—Dr. Muzammil Shakeel, Dr. Adeel Rather, and Dr. Shaheed Saeed—are now in police custody.
According to investigation sources, the four doctors had raised funds totaling Rs 20 lakh to execute terror attacks across Delhi. Reports indicate plans for a series of blasts across the National Capital Region on December 6, commemorating the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992. The entire sum was entrusted to Dr. Umar, who also helped procure around 26 quintals of NPK fertilizer from nearby markets, valued at roughly Rs 3 lakh, intended for use in improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
The sprawling 70-acre Al Falah University has been identified as a key hub for planning. Investigators found that Dr. Umar and his associates frequently met at building 17, room 13, where Dr. Muzammil resided. It is believed that crucial planning for blasts in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh took place in this room.
Authorities also discovered that chemicals were smuggled from the university laboratory for bomb-making. Dr. Umar and Dr. Shaheed reportedly arranged the chemicals, which were then stored in rented locations in Dhauj and Taga villages. Forensic analysis has recovered chemical residues, digital data, and encrypted diaries containing code words from the suspects’ rooms and the university lab.
The Delhi blast reportedly involved ANFO, an explosive compound made with ammonium nitrate and fuel oil. Police raids in Faridabad recovered over 2,000 kg of explosive materials, including 350 kg of ammonium nitrate.
In response, Al Falah University issued a statement condemning the blast and clarifying that the institution had no connection with the detained doctors beyond their official employment. Vice-Chancellor Bhupinder Kaur Anan expressed distress over reports aimed at maligning the university's reputation.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are piecing together the network, funding sources, and planning mechanisms behind the attack, signaling heightened vigilance across Delhi and surrounding regions.
