Top-ranked Houston delivered a powerful performance on Wednesday night, crushing visiting Oakland 78-45 in a one-sided matchup that showcased the Cougars’ balance, shooting, and defense. Houston’s top three scorers combined for more points than the entire Oakland team, underlining just how dominant the home side was from start to finish.
Emanuel Sharp led the charge for the Cougars with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting, while also adding four rebounds and four assists. Kingston Flemings matched him with 19 points of his own and recorded nine assists, showing excellent playmaking ability. Chris Cenac Jr. also contributed solidly, finishing with 11 points and four rebounds.
Oakland, now 0-3 on the season, had no answer to Houston’s intense defense. The Golden Grizzlies struggled badly, hitting just 16 of 51 shots from the floor, a mere 31.4 percent. This poor shooting performance was a result of Houston’s tight man-to-man coverage and quick defensive rotations that made it nearly impossible for Oakland to find open shots.
Before this matchup, Oakland had been a strong perimeter shooting team, making 19 three-pointers in its first two games against Michigan and Purdue. However, against Houston’s defense, the Grizzlies could not find their rhythm early. They went 0-for-5 from three-point range in the first half and only hit their first 3-pointer 15 seconds into the second half when Nassim Mashhour broke the drought.
Mashhour was one of the few bright spots for Oakland. He finished 3-of-4 from beyond the arc and provided some spark after halftime. Still, the team ended just 3-of-13 from long range overall. Isaac Garrett carried most of the scoring load, making eight of Oakland’s 16 field goals and finishing with a game-high 20 points. He was also the team’s only player to reach double figures.
For Houston, the win marked its first game since taking over the No. 1 spot in the Associated Press Top 25 rankings, swapping places with Purdue earlier in the week. The Cougars showed exactly why they earned that ranking with a near-perfect performance in front of their home crowd.
The game started with Houston jumping out to an early 8-0 lead just over a minute into play, thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers by Milos Uzan and Emanuel Sharp. By the time the score reached 21-8, Oakland’s Garrett had scored every single one of his team’s points. Houston’s offense continued to roll, while its defense shut down any attempt by Oakland to respond.
A 10-0 Houston run midway through the first half, followed by six straight points to close it, pushed the lead to 39-17 at halftime. The Cougars maintained full control throughout the second half, never allowing their lead to drop below 19 points. At one stage, they were up by 40, showing just how outmatched Oakland was.
Statistically, Houston dominated every major area of the game. The Cougars outrebounded Oakland 46-32, demonstrating their strength inside the paint. They also scored 40 points in the paint compared to Oakland’s 20, and their fastbreak play was outstanding, outscoring Oakland 17-2 in transition points.
Meanwhile, Oakland’s offense was stagnant and uncoordinated. The Golden Grizzlies finished with only six assists for the entire game and committed 13 turnovers — nearly as many as their total field goals made. This imbalance prevented them from gaining any momentum.
Houston’s depth and team chemistry continue to shine early in the season. The Cougars’ mix of offensive efficiency, quick ball movement, and defensive toughness has made them a clear favorite to remain at the top of the national rankings. Their balance between guard play and inside strength gives them an edge that few teams can match.
As the Cougars move forward, this performance will boost their confidence even more. For Oakland, however, it was another tough loss against a top-tier opponent, showing the gap they need to close before conference play begins.
