Anshul Sharma’s family dramedy De De Pyaar De 2 has reunited Ajay Devgn and R Madhavan after last year’s hit Shaitaan. The film registered its highest single-day earnings on Sunday with ₹13.75 crore at the domestic box office. This marked a clear rise from Saturday’s ₹12.25 crore, which itself was a strong 40% jump over the opening day figure of ₹8.75 crore.
With this momentum, the film closed its opening weekend at ₹34.75 crore in India, outperforming the ₹24.75 crore start of Son of Sardaar 2 earlier this year. Despite its stronger opening, the latter ultimately finished with ₹46.82 crore after losing ground to Saiyaara, which released just before it.
Though De De Pyaar De 2 has opened better than some of Devgn’s recent sequels, it still trails the original De De Pyaar De, which began with ₹39 crore (including paid previews) in 2019 and eventually crossed ₹100 crore with a domestic total of ₹104.13 crore. Whether the sequel can match that milestone remains uncertain. Even if it manages to cross the ₹100 crore mark, it is unlikely to surpass Devgn’s biggest hit of the year, Raid 2, which earned ₹173.05 crore and outperformed the first film in the franchise.
The film’s performance is also notably lower than Devgn and Madhavan’s previous collaboration, Shaitaan, which collected ₹54 crore in its opening weekend and went on to achieve ₹148 crore during its theatrical run.
Its box office journey may face additional challenges in the coming weeks, with several new releases lined up, including 120 Bahadur, Mastii 4, Tere Ishk Mein, Gustaakh Ishq, and Dhurandhar. Increased competition could affect the film’s long-term earnings.
