Northern Sumatra faced severe devastation following Cyclone Senyar's assault in late November. A total of 22 villages have seen total destruction due to overwhelming floods and landslides, leaving many neighborhoods disconnected from aid.
The Gayo Lues regency bore the brunt of the disaster, with eight villages completely washed away as torrents inundated the region. Additionally, Aceh Tamiang regency reported five villages entirely leveled by the catastrophe.
Authorities have observed that whole communities vanished under a torrent of mud and debris, with several residents confirmed dead and others forced to seek safety.
As the situation stands, approximately 15,000 individuals from 30 villages across Aceh remain cut off. These villages encompass various regencies, including Gayo Lues, Aceh Tamiang, Bener Meriah, North Aceh, East Aceh, and Southeast Aceh.
Blocked roads and downed bridges have compelled emergency responders to utilize helicopters and boats for delivering essential supplies. Heavy machinery is on hand to clear the wreckage, yet progress is sluggish.
Volunteers who ventured into the hardest-hit areas described appalling conditions. In one remote location, residents struggled with scant food supplies, with the only remaining structure being a mosque, now surrounded by devastation.
Many families sought refuge on nearby hills during the chaos and continue living in temporary shelters, hesitant to return due to fears of further flooding.
Cyclone Senyar made landfall on November 25, unleashing heavy rains and strong winds that led to rampant floods and landslides across Aceh and neighboring regions. The death toll has exceeded a thousand, with countless injuries and others still unaccounted for.
Aceh stands as the most affected province, suffering extensive damage to homes, infrastructure, and transport networks. Ongoing heavy rainfall during the wet season has instigated fresh flooding, obstructing rescue and reconstruction endeavors.
