Covid-19 Makes a Comeback in Asia Amid Summer Season

Post by : Layla Badr

Covid-19, the virus that first appeared more than five years ago, is spreading again in many parts of Asia. Big, busy cities like Hong Kong and Singapore are seeing a sharp rise in new cases. China and Thailand are also dealing with fresh outbreaks. What’s worrying is that this new wave is coming during a time of year when viruses like this usually slow down.

Hong Kong Sounds the Alarm

In Hong Kong, health officials have raised concern. The Centre for Health Protection reported a big jump in the number of people testing positive for Covid. Albert Au, who works at the Centre, said the number of positive samples is the highest seen in a year.

In the week that ended on May 3, Hong Kong had 31 serious Covid cases. That’s the most in a single week over the past year. The virus is not just showing up in tests — high levels of it have also been found in sewage water, which is another sign that Covid is spreading again. More people are also going to hospitals and clinics because they are sick with Covid symptoms.

Even the entertainment industry has been affected. Famous singer Eason Chan caught the virus, and because of that, his concerts in Taiwan had to be cancelled. His illness reminded many people that the virus is still a real threat and that everyone should stay careful.

Covid-19 Cases Rise 28% in Singapore

Singapore is also seeing a big increase. The country’s Ministry of Health said that in the week ending May 3, Covid cases rose by 28%. About 14,200 people were estimated to be infected. Hospital stays for Covid also went up by about 30%.

This is Singapore’s first major update on Covid numbers in nearly a year. Officials believe the reason for this new wave is that many people’s immunity has gone down over time — not because the virus has changed into a stronger or more dangerous version.

Even though it’s summer, which is not usually a time for viruses like this to spread, the number of cases is still growing. Health experts are asking older adults and people with weak immune systems to take a booster shot of the vaccine to protect themselves better.

Other Countries Also Affected

China is also facing rising cases. The country’s main health agency said that the number of people testing positive in hospitals more than doubled in the five weeks before May 4. This may lead to a wave of cases similar to what China saw last summer.

In Thailand, there have been two major outbreaks already this year. One big rise in cases came after the Songkran festival in April, which is a time when people gather to celebrate. That may have helped the virus spread more quickly.

Because of all this, health leaders in many countries are asking the public to stay alert. They are reminding people to get vaccinated, especially those who are most at risk of serious illness.

India Stays Stable — For Now

Unlike the other countries, India has not seen a big increase in Covid cases. The country’s official health website says there are only 93 active cases right now. Officials say there is no new wave at the moment. But they are watching the situation closely, especially since nearby countries are seeing more cases. It’s a reminder that things can change quickly.

Covid Still a Threat

This new rise in Covid-19 cases across Asia shows that the virus hasn’t gone away. Even though many people have relaxed their safety measures, the virus is still around and spreading.

What’s surprising is that this wave is happening in warmer weather, when viruses like this usually slow down. That shows Covid can behave in unexpected ways.

With places like Hong Kong, Singapore, China, and Thailand seeing more and more cases, it’s important for countries to work together. Sharing information and encouraging people to get vaccinated — especially with booster shots — can help stop the virus from spreading further.

The pandemic may feel like it's in the past, but this is a clear sign that we still need to stay alert and take care of our health.
