Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has set a new benchmark in treating brain aneurysms across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The hospital has adopted the first Artisse Intrasaccular Flow Modulator in the region, a revolutionary device designed to treat complex cerebral aneurysms more safely and effectively. Recognized by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi as a Centre of Excellence (CoE), this achievement highlights the hospital’s leadership in stroke treatment and its dedication to adopting cutting-edge medical technology.
Understanding Brain Aneurysms
A brain aneurysm is a serious medical condition where a weakened area in a blood vessel wall in the brain bulges outward, forming a balloon-like shape. If left untreated, these aneurysms can rupture and cause a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a type of stroke caused by bleeding in the brain. Brain aneurysms are dangerous because they can lead to long-term neurological damage or even death if immediate treatment is not provided.

Traditionally, aneurysms have been treated through invasive open surgery, which requires physically opening the skull to access and repair the blood vessel. While effective, open surgery carries significant risks, including infection, longer recovery times, and potential complications. However, medical advancements over the last decade have introduced minimally invasive procedures that can treat aneurysms with far less risk, less pain, and faster recovery times.
How the Artisse Intrasaccular Flow Modulator Works
The Artisse device offers a minimally invasive solution for treating brain aneurysms, particularly those with wide necks that are difficult to manage using traditional methods. The procedure begins with a catheter inserted through the patient’s blood vessels, usually via the groin or arm, to reach the aneurysm in the brain.
Using advanced 3D imaging and angiograms, physicians can precisely visualize the aneurysm and assess its shape and size. Once in position, the Artisse device, a unique mesh structure, is deployed into the aneurysm. The device fills the aneurysm, stopping blood from entering and significantly lowering the risk of rupture. Unlike traditional treatments that often use multiple coils, the Artisse device is permanent, offering long-term protection without the need for further invasive surgery.
The procedure itself can take anywhere from 2 to 8 hours, depending on the aneurysm’s size and complexity. After the procedure, patients undergo regular follow-up imaging at 3 and 6 months to ensure the device is functioning correctly. In the first case at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, 3-month follow-up imaging confirmed successful treatment, showing that the aneurysm had been effectively sealed off.
A Leap Forward in Neurological Care
The introduction of the Artisse device is a major advancement in neurological care. Unlike traditional aneurysm treatments, which rely on multiple coils or filaments to block blood flow, the Artisse device uses a single, intricately designed mesh to close off the aneurysm. This approach is not only safer but also more efficient, reducing the chances of complications and improving long-term outcomes for patients.
Dr. Fayeza Al Yafie, Executive Director of the Healthcare Quality Sector at the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, praised the hospital’s achievement: “Centres of Excellence in Abu Dhabi continue to affirm their commitment to enhancing the healthcare system by providing specialised care and utilising the emirate’s advanced infrastructure. Abu Dhabi’s dynamic regulatory environment encourages research and innovation, attracting talent and advanced technologies that benefit the health and safety of the community. We congratulate Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi on this milestone.”
Expert Opinions on the New Treatment
Dr. Khalil Zahra, Staff Physician, Neurosurgery, Neurological Institute at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, said: “The introduction of this technology enhances our ability to treat complex aneurysms and shows our commitment to bringing the latest medical advancements to our patients. Combined with our multidisciplinary approach, this device ensures world-class treatment for even the most challenging neurological conditions. The success of our first procedure marks a new era in brain aneurysm treatment, offering safer, less invasive options.”
Dr. Zahra emphasized that the adoption of the Artisse device is not just a one-time advancement. It is expected to pave the way for future innovation in neurological care. By gathering long-term data on patient outcomes, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi aims to contribute valuable insights to the global neurosurgical community and further solidify its position as a leader in the MENA region.
