In a significant move for national security, the Canadian Government has announced a $1.4 billion investment aimed at enhancing the country's ammunition production capacity, thereby reducing dependence on international suppliers. Joël Lightbound made the announcement at a Repentigny event.
This funding will be channeled through the Canadian Defence Industry Resilience Program (CDIR), which is focused on fortifying a self-sufficient defense industry. The initiative aims to assist companies in amplifying production capabilities, fortifying supply chains, and developing crucial defense facilities across Canada.
A notable portion of this investment will support General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems in various projects in Quebec. Planned developments include a nitrocellulose production plant in Valleyfield and new facilities for assembling and packaging artillery charges and high-explosive munitions in Valleyfield and Le Gardeur. These advancements are crucial for restoring vital manufacturing capabilities necessary for ammunition.
Additionally, the government is aiding IMT Precision in Ingersoll with funds to construct a facility specializing in the production of metal shells used in contemporary artillery systems, further enhancing Canada's independent defense capabilities.
Officials assert that this investment will not only bolster Canada's defensive posture but also yield economic advantages. The planned projects are projected to create numerous job opportunities and support local industries while stimulating further investments in the defense sector. By increasing local production, Canada seeks to secure a consistent supply of essential resources for the Armed Forces.
This initiative is part of Canada's comprehensive defense industrial strategy, which emphasizes supply chain resilience and the capability to address dynamic global security concerns. By expanding domestic production capabilities, Canada aims to exert better control over vital defense resources and reinforce long-term national security.
