Bank of Communications Expands Global Reach with New Branch in Dubai’s DIFC

Bank of Communications Co. Ltd. (BOCOM), one of the oldest banks in China, has opened a new branch in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). DIFC is a big financial area in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia (MEASA) region. The bank chose DIFC because it has a strong legal system and a healthy business environment.

BOCOM is the fifth largest bank in China, and it is the fifth Chinese bank to open an office in DIFC. The centre already has over 45 Chinese companies and many other banks from China and Hong Kong that want to grow in the region.

The new BOCOM branch in DIFC will help increase trade and investment between China and the MEASA region. It will also take advantage of the strong relationship between China and the UAE. This opening is important because it is happening at the same time as the 40th anniversary of UAE-China diplomatic ties and the 20th anniversary of DIFC’s opening.

Founded in 1908, BOCOM is listed on the Hong Kong and Shanghai stock exchanges. It is one of the most important banks in the world and ranks ninth for Tier 1 capital. By June 2024, BOCOM’s overseas assets were worth RMB 1.24 trillion, almost 9% of the bank’s total assets. The bank has 24 offices worldwide in major financial cities.

With the new branch in DIFC, BOCOM will be able to grow its business in the UAE and the wider Middle East. Dubai’s location and DIFC’s excellent facilities make it a good place for banks to expand. Other Chinese banks like the Agricultural Bank of China, Bank of China, China Construction Bank, and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China also have offices in DIFC.
