A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh on Friday morning, causing mild tremors in parts of eastern India. The earthquake occurred at 10:08 am IST, with its epicentre located about 14 kilometres from Narsingdi and 10 kilometres east-southeast of Dhaka.
Residents in Kolkata and neighbouring areas reported feeling the ground shake, with fans swaying and wall hangings moving slightly. Many people stepped out of their homes and offices in surprise, sharing videos and photos of the tremors on social media.
The tremors were also felt in other parts of West Bengal, including Dakshin Dinajpur, Uttar Dinajpur, and Cooch Behar. States such as Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram also experienced light shaking. Authorities confirmed that, so far, there have been no reports of injuries or damage.
Experts explain that earthquakes in this region occur due to the movement of the Indian tectonic plate against the Eurasian plate. This area, which includes northern India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, is seismically active and frequently experiences moderate to strong earthquakes that can be felt across borders.
In Pakistan, a separate earthquake of magnitude 3.9 struck on Thursday at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes tend to be more damaging because the seismic waves travel a shorter distance to the surface, causing stronger ground shaking.
Residents are advised to remain cautious of aftershocks and follow safety guidelines if tremors are felt again. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
