Apple May Move All iPhone Assembly to India in 2025

Apple is reportedly preparing for a major shift in its global production model, with plans to move the entire assembly of iPhones sold in the United States to India as early as next year, according to a report by the Financial Times.

This potential move would represent one of the biggest changes in Apple's manufacturing strategy, as the company seeks to reduce its reliance on China amid ongoing trade tensions and geopolitical uncertainties.

Sources suggest that the final decision will depend on how quickly India can scale up its production capabilities and strengthen its supply chain. Progress in trade talks between the US and China will also play a key role in shaping the timeline.

Former US President Donald Trump has been vocal about pushing American companies to cut manufacturing ties with China. He recently confirmed that tariff discussions with Beijing are still underway. Against this backdrop, Apple’s move towards India appears to be gaining momentum.

India is already playing an increasingly important role in Apple's supply chain. Foxconn, Apple’s main production partner, is ramping up operations at its new plant in Bengaluru. The facility is expected to begin production this month and could eventually manufacture up to 20 million iPhones annually.

Tamil Nadu, another key hub for Apple’s operations, is contributing significantly as well. Foxconn’s plant there is responsible for nearly 50% of Apple’s exports from India. According to industry data, exports from this facility rose by over 40% compared to the same period in the previous financial year.

Apple has also hit a new milestone in India, assembling iPhones worth $22 billion in the past year alone. India now accounts for about 20% of Apple’s total iPhone production globally, underlining the country’s growing importance in the company’s future plans.

The domestic market in India is showing strong signs of growth as well. In the first quarter of 2025, more than 3 million iPhones were shipped from the country — the highest ever recorded for Apple in India.

This growth has been fueled by a mix of attractive financing options, such as no-cost EMIs, cashback offers, and online discounts, making Apple’s premium products more accessible to a wider audience.

Industry experts believe Apple is well-positioned to maintain a healthy growth rate in India, estimating annual increases of 10-15% for the foreseeable future.

“With production rising and more local buyers coming in, India is quickly becoming a vital part of Apple’s global roadmap,” experts noted.

If Apple goes ahead with this plan, it would mark a historic pivot in the tech giant’s supply chain, cementing India’s role not just as a key market, but also as a central manufacturing base for one of the world’s most valuable companies.
