Apple’s latest iPhone 17 series has sparked a strong revival in China, recording a 22% rise in sales during its first month after launch compared with the same period last year. This comes after the iPhone 16 saw a 5% decline in its opening month, highlighting a significant rebound for the tech giant in the world’s largest smartphone market.
Majority of Sales Led by iPhone 17 Series
Data from Counterpoint Research reveals that nearly 80% of Apple’s sales since 19 September were driven by the iPhone 17 lineup. The launch generated large crowds at Apple’s Beijing flagship store, with hundreds queuing to purchase the new devices on release day. The surge indicates that, despite stiff competition from domestic brands like Xiaomi and Huawei, Apple continues to hold strong appeal among Chinese consumers.
Performance Amid a Slowing Market
The broader smartphone market in China remains subdued, with national sales declining 2.7% year-on-year in the third quarter due to cautious consumer spending. Against this backdrop, the iPhone 17 series has delivered much-needed momentum for Apple, suggesting that premium buyers are willing to invest in the latest features and improved performance.
iPhone 17 Highlights
The iPhone 17 boasts contoured edges, slimmer borders, and a front protected by Ceramic Shield 2. It features a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion technology that adjusts up to 120 Hz. Photography upgrades include a 48 MP Fusion Main camera with 2x optical-quality telephoto and a 48 MP Fusion Ultra Wide lens. Storage options start at 256 GB. The phone runs on Apple’s A19 chip, supporting advanced gaming, AI tools, Live Translation, and Image Playground. Battery performance is strong, and a 10-minute high-wattage charge provides up to eight hours of video playback.
The strong opening of the iPhone 17 series demonstrates Apple’s continued relevance in China’s premium smartphone segment. With innovative features and high consumer demand, the company has successfully reversed last year’s weak start, signaling optimism for the coming quarters.
