Nairobi, Kenya — A dormitory at Njia Boys High School in Meru County was consumed by fire on Sunday evening while students were having supper. According to a police statement, there were no casualties reported in the blaze.
The fire completely destroyed the building, which housed approximately 150 students. The inferno obliterated the dormitory and damaged property of unknown value. Fortunately, no students were in the dormitory at the time of the incident.
This fire marks the third school fire in Kenya within a span of just a few days. On Thursday, a tragic blaze claimed the lives of 21 boys at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri County while they were sleeping. The fire resulted in a devastating loss of life and has drawn significant attention to the issue of school safety in Kenya.
Following this, another fire occurred on Saturday at a girls' high school in Isiolo County. While several injuries were reported, police later confirmed that no one was seriously hurt in that incident.

The recent spate of school fires has ignited a national conversation about safety standards in educational institutions. President William Ruto has pledged that those responsible for the fires will be held accountable and that measures will be taken to prevent such tragedies in the future.
The government is now under pressure to address the safety concerns that have been highlighted by these incidents and to ensure that adequate protections are in place to safeguard students across the country.
