A wildfire raging east of Los Angeles has prompted a significant evacuation effort as it continues to spread uncontrollably through the foothills of a national forest. Known as the Line Fire, the blaze began Thursday evening and is currently burning along the edge of the San Bernardino National Forest, approximately 65 miles (105 kilometers) east of LA. As of Saturday afternoon, the fire has scorched about 11 square miles (28 square kilometers) of grass and chaparral, with dense smoke blanketing the area.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. In response, approximately 500 firefighters are on the ground battling the blaze, supported by water-dropping helicopters and aircraft. The firefighting efforts are aimed at containing the fire, which is producing large plumes of smoke and visible flames cresting hillside ridges. Despite the extensive efforts, firefighters have indicated that the blaze has significant potential for further growth in the coming hours.
As the fire continues to advance, evacuations have been expanded to protect residents in the affected areas. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, and there have been no reports of damage to homes or other structures.

The wildfire is occurring during a severe heat wave that has pushed temperatures into the triple digits across the region. On Friday, downtown Los Angeles recorded a high of 112 degrees Fahrenheit (44 degrees Celsius), marking only the third time since 1877 that such extreme temperatures have been recorded there. The ongoing heatwave is exacerbating the challenges faced by firefighters and contributing to the fire's rapid spread.
