Jannik Sinner will kick off his quest to defend his ATP Finals crown this Sunday, aiming to cap a turbulent yet remarkable year that could culminate in another thrilling showdown with his top rival, Carlos Alcaraz.
The world number one has claimed two Grand Slam titles in 2025, including a historic Wimbledon final victory over Alcaraz, after comfortably winning the ATP Finals in Turin last year. Both Sinner and Alcaraz are expected to advance from their respective groups—Bjorn Borg and Jimmy Connors—setting the stage for a potential epic clash in the semifinals or final of the elite eight-player tournament.
Reflecting on the upcoming challenge, Sinner told reporters, "The first match is really important because usually you don't play against one of the best eight players in the world, and that's what makes it different for everyone."
However, Sinner’s season has not been without controversy. A three-month ban interrupted his campaign after the World Anti-Doping Agency confirmed accidental contamination with a banned substance last year. Additionally, his decision to skip Italy’s Davis Cup title defense in Bologna sparked criticism from parts of the Italian media. Despite this, Sinner reaffirmed his pride in representing Italy during a recent interview.
Sinner remains a fan favorite in Italy, where he will be cheered on by a passionate crowd in Turin, recalling his unbeaten run last year while Alcaraz exited in the group stage.
Alcaraz, who has also won two Grand Slams this year—including a memorable Roland Garros final against Sinner—trained with his rival ahead of the tournament. The Spaniard is chasing his first ATP Finals title and a chance to claim the year-end No. 1 ranking by outperforming his previous Finals run.
The two superstars maintain a respectful and friendly rivalry. Alcaraz said, "Once we step on the court, we want to do our best just to win the match. But afterwards, when we shake hands off the court, we are the same person. That’s a really healthy rivalry."
Meanwhile, tensions persist off the court, as top ATP and WTA players jointly push Grand Slam organizers for improved revenue sharing and player welfare measures. Talks have stalled since the US Open, with women’s No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka voicing frustration at the lack of dialogue, while male players including Sinner and Alex de Minaur have remained more reserved.
The ATP Finals promise to be a spectacular culmination of a compelling season for men’s tennis, with Sinner and Alcaraz at the heart of the action.
