The Conservative Party of Canada is navigating turbulent waters as two prominent MPs recently left its ranks, raising questions about leader Pierre Poilievre’s control ahead of the January convention. While Poilievre has focused on critiquing Prime Minister Mark Carney’s inaugural budget, the spotlight has shifted back to internal party stability.
Nova Scotia MP Chris d’Entremont’s unexpected defection to the Liberals and Alberta MP Matt Jeneroux’s sudden retirement have caught political observers off guard. Both departures, though different in circumstances, present an advantage for the Carney government, which has seen its early initiatives gain attention.
Insiders suggest these moves reflect a deeper unease within the Conservative caucus, with some members questioning Poilievre’s ability to unite the party and regain public confidence. “There’s a lot of people in wait-and-see mode right now… it’s more like ‘does this guy have it?’” one anonymous source noted.
Both d’Entremont and Jeneroux were previously expected to continue serving, assuming a Conservative government would follow recent polling surges. Yet, their interest in remaining in opposition appears limited, highlighting potential challenges for Poilievre in the next federal election.
D’Entremont, a veteran Nova Scotian politician from a progressive Red Tory tradition, has long been seen as misaligned with Poilievre’s combative, Western-focused brand of conservatism. His move to the Liberals has fueled speculation about additional discontent within Conservative ranks.
Meanwhile, Jeneroux, first elected in 2015, announced his retirement citing family priorities, a rare move that has sparked rumors of deeper political calculations. Multiple reports suggested he had discussions with the Carney government before leaving, though these remain unverified.
For Poilievre, the immediate impact is largely a media frenzy. Sources close to him suggest these departures are temporary distractions, a familiar pattern in Canadian politics. However, as the Liberals consolidate their position and maintain momentum in the House of Commons, longer-term implications for party cohesion and leadership perception cannot be ignored.
The coming months will be critical as Conservatives prepare for their convention and face the prospect of at least three more years of Liberal control. Whether Poilievre can stabilize his caucus and refocus the party’s energy will determine his political legacy.
