Luxury brand Prada has once again grabbed headlines, but this time not for its runway shows or haute couture. The Italian fashion house has introduced a seemingly simple accessory — a safety pin brooch — priced at a staggering ₹69,000 ($775).
The item, officially named the "Crochet Safety Pin Brooch," is wrapped in vibrant crochet thread and features Prada’s iconic triangle logo charm. Made from brass and cotton, the brooch measures approximately 3.15 inches and comes in three distinct color combinations: blue and brown, baby pink with pistachio green, and orange with brown, giving it an autumnal aesthetic.
What has left many in disbelief is the contrast between its luxury pricing and the ordinary safety pin that costs barely ₹10 for a pack in local markets. Social media users were quick to voice their reactions. One user remarked, “We would do something like this in school in our needlework class!!” Another noted, “I could make this with any color and even get a gold charm for the safety pin hole.” The affordability gap prompted yet another to comment, “Entire closet can be filled in ₹70,000,” while others shared anecdotes about buying similar pins from local markets for just a few rupees.
This is not Prada’s first foray into controversial pricing. Earlier, the brand launched Kolhapuri-style chappals priced at ₹1.2 lakh, evoking criticism over the lack of recognition for the traditional Indian artisans behind the design. The controversy escalated to the point where a public interest litigation (PIL) was filed in the Bombay High Court, demanding compensation for the alleged design appropriation.
While luxury fashion houses often market everyday items at premium prices to appeal to exclusivity and brand prestige, the safety pin brooch episode underscores the fine line between high fashion and public skepticism. Many see it as a bold statement of brand value, while others regard it as an example of unnecessary extravagance.
