Apple is reportedly planning a major upgrade to the front cameras in its upcoming iPhone 18 series, according to a JP Morgan research note highlighted by MacRumors. The report suggests that all flagship models, including the iPhone 18, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone Air 2, and Apple’s first foldable iPhone, will feature a 24-megapixel front camera, a notable jump from the 18-megapixel cameras found in the iPhone 17 series.
This upgrade could mark a significant leap in Apple’s selfie technology, promising sharper images, improved low-light performance, and enhanced detail for portrait photography. It comes after the iPhone 17 series introduced an 18-megapixel sensor along with Apple’s “Center Stage” feature, which uses a wider field-of-view to keep subjects centered during video calls.
Interestingly, the foldable iPhone—likely branded as the iPhone 18 Fold—may include Apple’s first under-display front camera at 24 megapixels. This would allow for a seamless inner display without any visible cut-outs, a design milestone that Apple has yet to achieve in its devices. The foldable iPhone is expected to adopt a book-style form factor, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series.
While the premium models are expected to receive these camera enhancements, Apple’s lower-cost iPhone 18e and second-generation iPhone 17e are rumored to retain a 12-megapixel front camera, keeping costs lower while targeting mainstream users.
Another notable change could be Apple’s launch schedule, which may shift from the traditional single-year release to two separate windows starting 2026. Higher-end models, including the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone Air 2, and foldable iPhone, may launch in the second half of 2026, while standard models could arrive in spring 2027.
With these rumored upgrades, Apple seems focused on pushing front-camera performance to new heights, catering to social media trends and the growing demand for high-quality selfies and video calls.
