A Mumbai-to-Dehradun IndiGo flight faced a bird strike just minutes before landing at Jolly Grant Airport on Sunday evening. Flight IGO 5032, carrying 186 passengers, was approaching the airport around 6:45 pm when a bird collided with the aircraft’s nose. The impact caused visible damage to the front part of the plane, but the pilots managed to land safely without any injuries to passengers or crew.

Following the landing, an engineering team immediately inspected the aircraft and confirmed the damage. The plane has since been taken for detailed inspection and necessary repairs to ensure it meets all safety standards before returning to service. Airport officials also conducted a thorough safety audit of the runway as part of standard protocol after such incidents.

A bird strike occurs when a bird collides with an aircraft, usually during take-off or landing when planes are flying at lower altitudes. While many bird strikes are minor, they are taken seriously due to the potential to damage sensitive parts of the aircraft. Commonly affected areas include the nose cone, windshield, wings, and landing lights. The most significant risk arises when birds get sucked into jet engines, which can cause vibrations, power loss, or in extreme cases, engine shutdown. Modern engines are designed to withstand impacts from small birds, but larger birds pose a higher threat.

When a bird strike occurs, pilots immediately inform air traffic control and, if airborne, follow protocols to land safely. After touchdown, engineers perform structural and mechanical inspections to ensure the aircraft is fit for further operations. Airports implement various preventive measures to minimize bird strikes, such as deploying trained personnel, using lasers, and other bird-scaring tools to keep birds away from runways.

In this incident, all 186 passengers remained unharmed. Crew members also reported no injuries, and the flight was safely evacuated as per standard operating procedures. The prompt response by the pilots and airport authorities ensured that the situation was handled without any disruption or risk to passenger safety.

Bird strikes are relatively common in aviation but rarely lead to accidents due to stringent safety protocols and rapid response measures. Aviation authorities continue to focus on preventive strategies and runway management to reduce such risks and maintain the safety of air travel.
