As 2026 commenced, the United States faced significant weather challenges, with torrential rain impacting Southern California’s renowned New Year’s Day festivities while snow, fierce winds, and frigid temperatures wreaked havoc elsewhere.
In Pasadena, the legendary Rose Parade was soaked by one to two inches of rain for the first time in two decades, dampening the spirit of the thousands in attendance along the nearly six-mile route. The parade commenced at 8 a.m. with temperatures around 58°F (14°C), yet this did not deter the vibrant display of marching bands and elaborate floral floats.
Despite the challenging weather, the parade proceeded with minimal alterations, primarily for vehicles transporting honored guests. While large crowds braved the rain to witness the event live, millions more tuned in from their homes.
California weather officials responded by issuing flood watches and coastal flood advisories along the Pacific coast. Due to the heavy rains, residents in areas previously scarred by last year’s wildfires near Los Angeles were placed under evacuation advisories, fearing flooding and mudslides.
In contrast, the East Coast rang in the New Year amid frigid conditions. New York City experienced one of its coldest starts to the New Year in nearly a decade, as revelers dressed warmly for outdoor celebrations, bracing themselves against the winter chill.
Additionally, the Midwest and Northeast weren't spared, as an Alberta clipper storm brought snow squalls and brisk winds, complicating travel in states like Wisconsin, Illinois, and New Jersey.
The impact on air travel was evident, with about 25% of flights departing from bustling airports in San Diego and Boston facing delays, creating obstacles for those traveling at the start of the new year.
From the drenched parades in California to the icy grip felt throughout the Midwest and Northeast, the extreme weather marked a dramatic beginning to 2026 in the United States.
