Vietnam is gearing up to host an unprecedented influx of international tourists, with estimates suggesting around 21 million visitors will arrive this year. This statistic signifies a remarkable turnaround for the tourism industry, which suffered greatly during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, these impressive figures reflect a renewed global enthusiasm for travel to Vietnam.

The nation recently commemorated the arrival of its 20 millionth foreign visitor with a special celebration on Phu Quoc Island. This event underscores the rapid resurgence of tourism, as arrivals in 2025 are projected to surpass the previous record of 18 million, established in 2019 before global travel disruptions.

Government statistics reveal that foreign arrivals have increased by over 19 percent compared to the previous year. Vietnam continues to allure travelers with its picturesque coastlines, stunning natural landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and historic sites, cementing its position as a premier destination in Southeast Asia.

The revival of tourism comes even in the face of several environmental obstacles. Hanoi has been frequently ranked as one of the most polluted cities globally this year, raising concerns about air quality. Simultaneously, heavy rainfall has resulted in significant flooding in popular tourist destinations like Hue, Hoi An, and Nha Trang, affecting local life and travel arrangements.

Despite these challenges, interest from visitors remains robust. Officials note that many tourists are drawn to Vietnam due to its affordability, variety of experiences, and enhanced travel services. Tourism operators are also adjusting their offerings to accommodate the growing demand from international visitors.

The contrast with pandemic years is striking. In 2021, strict border measures caused foreign visitors to plummet to fewer than 160,000, marking the lowest number in recent years. The swift recovery that has followed the easing of travel restrictions highlights the resilience of the tourism sector.

Data from the National Statistics Office indicates that China has been the leading source of visitors to Vietnam in the first 11 months of this year, contributing around one-quarter of total arrivals. Other significant markets include South Korea, Taiwan, the United States, and Japan. Authorities anticipate that this strong rebound in Vietnamese tourism will persist in the upcoming years.
