Dhaka — A team of UN experts is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka today to initiate a framework for a fact-finding mission aimed at investigating the recent violent suppression of protesters in Bangladesh. The mission will focus on the killings of at least 650 individuals who were involved in protests preceding and following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The UN delegation is expected to remain in Bangladesh for at least one week. During their stay, they will engage with various stakeholders, including civil society groups, victims of human rights violations, students, and government officials. Their primary goal is to establish a comprehensive framework for a more detailed investigation to follow.

A UN official in Dhaka, as reported by The Daily Star, stated, "This initial team of experts is tasked with laying the groundwork for the broader UN fact-finding mission. We anticipate formalizing the investigation framework during their visit."

The backdrop to this mission includes significant unrest that unfolded after Prime Minister Hasina's government collapsed amid intense protests over quota reforms for government jobs. Following her resignation on August 5, Hasina fled to India, and the Army assumed control of the government. The violence, which began in late July and continued into August, led to a severe crackdown on demonstrators.

Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal has also commenced an investigation into allegations of genocide and crimes against humanity related to the recent protests. This inquiry targets Hasina and nine other individuals, examining the atrocities committed from July 15 to August 5 during the widespread student-led demonstrations against her administration.

The UN's visit underscores the international community's concern over the escalating violence and the urgent need for accountability and justice in Bangladesh.
