The United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) has been ranked first in the UAE and 67th worldwide for the number of US utility patents granted in 2025, according to the annual global ranking released by the National Academy of Inventors (NAI).
This major achievement comes during UAEU’s Golden Jubilee, marking 50 years of academic and research growth. UAEU is also the only university in the UAE included in the Top 100 Universities Worldwide list for granted US patents.
UAEU has shown strong progress over the years. The university was ranked 90th globally in 2021, and has now improved to 67th place in 2025, reflecting its growing international research impact.
In the 2025 ranking, UAEU shared the 67th global position with ETH Zurich, one of the world’s leading institutions in science and technology.
The university’s total number of granted patents has now crossed 365, with most of them issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). These patents reflect UAEU’s focus on turning research into practical innovations that support economic growth and technological advancement.
UAEU’s patents cover several important areas aligned with the UAE’s national priorities, including:
Renewable and sustainable energy
Medical and health sciences
Space science and technology
Artificial intelligence
Advanced materials, material science, and manufacturing
Most of the patents granted in 2025 were developed by faculty and researchers from the College of Engineering, highlighting its strong role in applied research and technology commercialisation.
As the UAE’s national university, UAEU continues to support the country’s innovation ecosystem and contributes to the goals of the ‘We the UAE 2031’ vision, along with other national strategies focused on advanced technology, sustainability, and economic diversification.
This recognition during UAEU’s 50th anniversary highlights the university’s long-term commitment to research excellence, global engagement, and scientific innovation that supports sustainable national development.
