Residents across the UAE and millions of people around the world are preparing for a rare and exciting event this weekend: the Blood Moon. This spectacular celestial show is a total lunar eclipse, and in the UAE, stargazers will be able to enjoy it for nearly five and a half hours, with the most intense total eclipse stage lasting about 1 hour and 22 minutes.
During this event, the moon will appear red in the sky. This happens because the Earth moves directly between the sun and the moon. The Earth’s shadow falls across the moon, blocking most of the sunlight, and giving the moon a deep red glow — which is why people call it the "Blood Moon."
The total phase of the eclipse is expected to begin at 9:30 pm and continue until around 10:52 pm. However, even before and after this peak, people can see different stages of the eclipse as the moon gradually moves into and out of the Earth’s shadow. Anyone hoping to watch the event should choose locations with clear skies, away from city lights and humidity, for the best view.
Top Places to Watch the Blood Moon in the UAE
1. Jebel Jais – This is the highest mountain in the UAE, located in Ras Al Khaimah. Here, residents can enjoy the cool mountain air and panoramic views of the night sky. Jebel Jais is also famous for adventure activities and restaurants, so families can combine stargazing with a fun day out.
2. Al Qudra Desert – Known for its quiet, open spaces, Al Qudra Desert is perfect for seeing the moon without city lights interfering. The desert is unique because it has man-made lakes, including Al Qudra Lake, where visitors may also spot swans while enjoying the desert landscape. Stargazers should follow safety precautions while exploring the dunes at night.
3. Liwa Desert – Situated in Abu Dhabi, this desert is historically the home of the Bani Yas tribe. Watching the Blood Moon here is a special experience because you will be looking at the same skies as generations of UAE ancestors. The Liwa Desert is also famous for its tall sand dunes, some reaching more than 150 meters high, making it a dramatic backdrop for the lunar eclipse.

4. Hajar Mountains – Stretching across the UAE and Oman, the Hajar Mountains are another top spot to view the Blood Moon. The rugged peaks provide a stunning natural setting, combining adventure with the beauty of the celestial event.
Watching a Blood Moon is not just a treat for astronomy lovers. Many families, photographers, and nature enthusiasts also use this rare occasion to connect with nature, enjoy outdoor activities, and capture incredible photos.
Experts suggest bringing binoculars or telescopes to see the moon’s surface in more detail. Even without special equipment, the red glow of the moon will be clearly visible to the naked eye, creating an unforgettable spectacle.
This event is also a reminder of the universe’s wonderful natural rhythms, as total lunar eclipses do not happen very often. For some locations, it can be years before the next Blood Moon is visible.
Whether you are a casual sky watcher, a professional astronomer, or a family looking for an exciting evening, the September 7 Blood Moon is a must-watch event. Just make sure to check the weather, pick a clear location, and bring warm clothing if you plan to watch from the mountains or desert at night.
This rare lunar eclipse is expected to be seen not only across the UAE but around the globe, connecting people through the shared experience of looking up at the same red moon in the night sky.
