The United Arab Emirates (UAE), through its Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, joined the BRICS Transport Ministers’ meeting in Brasília, Brazil. Sheikh Nasser Al Qasimi, who works as Assistant Undersecretary in the ministry, spoke during the session on behalf of the UAE.
In his talk, he shared the country’s recent work in smart travel systems and clean transport. He said the UAE is working hard on plans built using facts, new ideas, and teamwork with other countries. He also said that working together is the best way to solve big world problems in the transport field.
Sheikh Nasser spoke about the Etihad Rail project, a major train line that will stretch 1,200 kilometers across the country. This railway is set to carry over 60 million tons of goods and 36.5 million passengers each year by 2030. The project is also expected to cut carbon smoke by 8.2 million tons every year.
He then talked about how cities in the UAE are growing smarter. The use of electric cars is rising, and the country hopes to begin air taxi flights by 2026. The UAE also now has over 700 electric charging stations as of the end of 2024.

In the skies, the UAE is planning to make green jet fuel, with hopes to produce 700 million liters every year by 2030. By 2031, the country wants at least 1% of all plane fuel to be mixed with this clean fuel. In 2024, UAE airports handled over 140 million travelers and 4 million tons of cargo.
In sea transport, the UAE wants to cut harmful smoke at ports by 70% by 2030. It also plans to run Jebel Ali Port fully on clean energy. Sheikh Nasser said the UAE supports starting a BRICS group for international goods movement to make shipping smoother and greener.
The UAE also said it backs the idea of setting up a BRICS Institute for Clean Transport, where countries can share ideas and skills. This institute would help bring regions closer and push for cleaner ways to move people and goods.
UAE officials joined planning talks before the main session. Experts and leaders from other nations also took part. They spoke about good examples of clean travel, smarter cities, green plane fuel, better flight links, cutting port smoke, and ship transport. One idea discussed was to create a shared group within BRICS to help with international delivery.
At the end of the talks, a list of helpful ideas and steps was made, showing that all BRICS members want to work side by side to build a strong and future-ready travel system for the world.
