Abu Dhabi — A recent trend has caught the attention of social media users around the world. Many people are using AI-powered apps that turn selfies into artistic images, inspired by Studio Ghibli’s dreamlike style. While these apps are fun and creative, experts in the UAE are warning about the privacy risks and the potential misuse of personal data that come with using these apps.
Dr. Mohamed Al Kuwaiti, the Head of Cybersecurity for the UAE Government, stressed the importance of protecting personal data in today’s world, where technology is advancing so quickly. He explained that using unverified or unofficial apps could lead to serious problems, such as account breaches or the leakage of personal data.
"Cybersecurity threats are not new," Dr. Al Kuwaiti said. "However, as AI becomes easier to access, it’s more important than ever to be careful. Sharing personal photos with untrusted sources can lead to exploitation."

The Need for Awareness
Dr. Al Kuwaiti emphasized that data privacy is not only the responsibility of individuals but also of institutions and companies. He acknowledged the many benefits of AI, but he urged people to understand how these apps handle and store their data.
“We need strong cybersecurity measures in place across all platforms,” he said. “Awareness of privacy should not stop at the app. It should cover the entire digital space.”
He also praised AI tools like ChatGPT, calling them an important part of the new digital age. While he acknowledged that using apps to turn photos into creative, stylized images is an exciting development in AI, he reminded people that these technologies can also be misused.
Legal and Ethical Concerns
Legal experts are also warning about the risks of using these AI apps. Adel Al-Rashed, an Emirati journalist and a member of the UAE Journalists Association, explained that while AI can offer creative possibilities, it can also be dangerous if used incorrectly.
“These unofficial, free apps often look like trusted platforms, but they may be stealing user data,” Al-Rashed said. “They could store or share images with unknown parties, which increases the risk of cyber threats.”
Al-Rashed advised users to stick with verified, secure apps. He mentioned that paid versions of apps like ChatGPT, such as the Pro or Teams editions, offer stronger privacy protections. These versions allow users to turn off data sharing options, keeping their personal information safer.
Balancing Excitement with Caution
Social media influencer Ibrahim Al-Thahli shared a more balanced view. He acknowledged both the exciting possibilities and the risks of AI-driven creativity. Al-Thahli said that AI has become a huge part of how people interact online and adds a new dimension to daily life.
“Security risks have always been a part of the internet. What’s new is how quickly and widely AI can create images — sometimes even without the person’s consent,” Al-Thahli said.
However, he urged the public not to panic or be overly fearful, especially when the people spreading these warnings don’t have technical knowledge.
“There are risks, but they are manageable,” he explained. “What’s most important is educating people and giving them the tools to use AI wisely.”
Al-Thahli ended by saying that the UAE’s focus on building a knowledge-based economy is about empowering the public to understand and use AI safely. “We need to encourage society to embrace AI, learn about it, and use it safely,” he said. “This is how we can build digital resilience for the future.”
