Dubai — Major UAE airlines have begun cancelling and delaying flights after Israel launched airstrikes against military and nuclear sites inside Iran, sparking heightened regional tensions and airspace restrictions.
Emirates temporarily cancelled EK‑920 and EK‑922 flights between Dubai and Tehran as part of its precautionary policy on volatile airspace. A spokesperson emphasized that safety is the top concern and urged customers to check online before heading to the airport.
Similarly, Etihad Airways suspended its Abu Dhabi–Tehran EY‑342/EY‑343 service and rerouted several Abu Dhabi to Istanbul flights to avoid entering potentially unstable air corridors. flydubai redirected its Dubai–Shiraz flight, opting for a longer but safer path, causing up to three-hour delays.
All three carriers reinforced that no Emirates, Etihad, or flydubai aircraft, crew or passengers were in danger, and emphasized that these are preventive measures aimed at flight safety amid regional unpredictability. Travelers on affected routes have been offered rebooking, refunds, or alternate schedules supported by Gulf Civil Aviation authorities.
The disruptions come after Israeli air force strikes hit northern Iran late Thursday, targeting air defense systems and military installations. This marks a notable escalation in the conflict involving Israel’s “preemptive” strategy, prompting immediate international alerts across the Gulf. Iran condemned the action, with reports of its air defense systems shooting down bombs fired toward its northern border.
Middle East aviation regulators responded swiftly, issuing notices to airlines about restricted airspace along certain Iran–UAE–Iran corridors. Gulf airports also tightened emergency response plans, with enhanced security and alerting systems for passenger and crew protection.
Passengers reported being informed through SMS alerts and airline mobile apps. Many departing from Dubai International and Abu Dhabi International chose to stay home until their travel plans solidified, while business travelers experienced rescheduled meetings as airlines adjusted timetables.

Flight-safe analysts say these disruptions reflect a cautious but necessary step. “Airlines always avoid conflict zones—even indirect ones—we’re still seeing ripple effects from regional strain,” said aviation advisor Mariam Al Hassan. Gulf carriers are equipped to quickly reroute around troubled areas but delays are deemed unavoidable until airspace stability returns.
This situation underscores the interconnectedness of Gulf air travel and geopolitics. Istanbul, a common hub for Middle East–Europe travel, saw increased congestion as diverted flights arrived. Meanwhile, Gulf-based airlines scrambled to reassign aircraft and crew while preserving service continuity.
Officials from the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority assured that “flight operations are under constant review” and urged travelers to maintain communication with airlines and official apps for real-time updates.
As flights resume their regular paths, industry observers expect brief turbulence in airfare pricing, charter demand, and cargo logistics. But experts predict Gulf operators will quickly adapt, minimizing passenger inconvenience once diplomatic de-escalation takes hold.
