A senior US State Department official expressed uncertainty about Israel's potential response to the anniversary of Hamas' attacks on October 7, saying it is "really hard to tell" if Israel would retaliate. The comments come amid growing tensions following a barrage of ballistic missile strikes from Iran targeting Israel. The official noted that while they hope Israel would exercise wisdom, there are no guarantees regarding its military decisions, especially concerning Iranian nuclear sites.
The official's remarks followed Iran's recent missile attack on Israel, in which 181 ballistic missiles were launched, prompting nationwide air raid sirens and sending nearly 10 million Israelis to bomb shelters. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for the attack, which targeted three military bases near Tel Aviv. Despite most missiles being intercepted, there were reports of damage and injuries, including two civilians hurt in Tel Aviv and a Palestinian killed in the West Bank.

In response to the Iranian aggression, US officials reiterated their support for Israel's right to defend itself. Matthew Miller, the spokesperson for the US Department of State, emphasized that consequences must follow Iran's actions, stating, "Israel has a right to defend itself, as any nation does."
President Joe Biden has reportedly advised against Israel targeting Iranian nuclear facilities. In a press briefing, he mentioned that if he were in Israel's position, he would consider alternatives to attacking oil fields, reflecting a cautious approach to the escalating conflict.
As the situation unfolds, the US is closely monitoring Israel's responses and the broader implications for regional stability. The ambiguity surrounding Israel's military intentions and the potential for further escalation raises concerns about the ongoing conflict in the region.
