Global airlines are feeling the crunch as jet fuel prices spike and supplies dwindle, primarily due to the ongoing Iran conflict. Executives warn of potential flight reductions and grounded aircraft if the situation does not improve.
Prominent carriers such as Qantas, Lufthansa, and Virgin Atlantic have indicated that they are grappling with escalating operational hurdles. Surging fuel prices have compelled airlines to raise ticket prices, implement extra fees, and rethink their route strategies.
The price of jet fuel has reportedly more than doubled since the conflict's escalation, creating significant hurdles for many airlines, as fuel represents a major share of their operational costs.
According to Lufthansa officials, although no planes have been grounded yet, some airports, especially in Asia, are facing fuel shortages that may jeopardize flight operations. Airlines are already devising contingency strategies to navigate the crisis.
In light of these rising expenses, various airlines are scaling back operations, putting investment plans on hold, and altering staffing arrangements. Reports indicate some may have begun reducing hours or contemplating temporary furloughs.
Additionally, disruptions in vital global routes and constrained supply through key energy corridors are exacerbating the situation. Experts caution that recovery might take time, even if geopolitical tensions subside.
Industry leaders have urged the government to implement support measures, including policy reforms and collective fuel purchasing plans. As uncertainty looms large, airlines remain vigilant over the evolving scenario.
