Malaysia Steps Up Assistance Amid Fuel Crisis

In a proactive step to assist farmers and diesel users, the Malaysian government has unveiled an uptick in subsidies and cash aid due to escalating fuel prices and global supply chain challenges. This initiative aims to secure food supply stability.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim emphasized that prioritizing the availability of essential goods is critical. He assured that the government stands ready to bolster its financial efforts in light of surging global energy costs.

For the upcoming 2026 planting season, the Paddy Cultivation Incentive will increase from RM160 to RM300 per hectare, benefiting around 200,000 farmers nationwide.

Additionally, the monthly diesel cash aid for the Budi Agri-Komoditi and Budi Individual Diesel programmes will see an increase from RM300 to RM400, starting in April 2026, with payments slated for distribution beginning April 21.

These assistance programs aim to serve over 200,000 farmers and smallholders, as well as about 150,000 owners of diesel vehicles in Peninsular Malaysia. Increased funding has been set aside to support these initiatives.

Furthermore, the government has eased regulations on diesel purchases for non-vehicle uses, allowing farmers and equipment operators to buy larger diesel quantities without the need for special permits, provided they maintain proper documentation.

The Ministry of Finance has projected total subsidy spending for April 2026 may approach RM7 billion. The government will closely observe global conditions, particularly the implications of the West Asia conflict, and is prepared to introduce further measures as necessary.
