U.S. President Donald Trump has once again drawn attention and controversy with his latest actions and words. On Saturday, September 6, 2025, he posted a parody image that compared Chicago to a war zone. The post included a fiery scene with helicopters flying over the city, and he dressed like a military officer from the famous movie Apocalypse Now. Alongside the image, he wrote: “I love the smell of deportations in the morning.” He also added, “Chicago is about to find out why it’s called the Department of WAR.”

The President called this version “Chipocalypse Now”, using Chicago’s name to play on the title of the 1979 Vietnam War film. In the movie, the line “I love the smell of napalm in the morning” is famously spoken by actor Robert Duvall. Trump’s post quickly sparked anger, especially because it came one day after he signed an executive order to change the name of the Department of Defense to the Department of War.

Trump’s ‘Department of War’ Move

Trump has spent months pushing for this change, saying it shows strength. At the same time, he has been campaigning to win international recognition, even asking to be considered for the Nobel Peace Prize. However, this change to rename the Pentagon still needs Congress to approve it, and legal challenges are expected. Critics believe Trump is trying to revive aggressive and outdated language that could send the wrong signal globally.

Clash with Illinois Leaders

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker strongly condemned Trump’s words. He said the President is acting like a “wannabe dictator” and trying to intimidate Americans. Pritzker posted on social media, “This is not a joke. This is not normal. Donald Trump isn’t a strongman, he’s a scared man. Illinois won’t be intimidated by a wannabe dictator.”

Pritzker also pointed out that the President was “threatening to go to war with an American city.” He warned that Illinois will not stay silent and that the state is preparing to fight Trump’s plans in court. Many Chicago city officials have also promised legal action if Trump tries to forcefully send troops and immigration agents into the city.

Trump’s Plans for Chicago

The President has been warning for months that he will send more federal forces into cities run by Democrats. Chicago, being one of the largest Democratic strongholds, is now at the center of his attention. Trump claims the city is unsafe and full of crime, and he says deploying the National Guard and immigration agents will help “restore order.”

Earlier this summer, he sent troops to Los Angeles, followed by Washington, D.C. He has also threatened to do the same in Baltimore, New Orleans, and Portland, Oregon. In one speech, he even said federal forces might “wipe out” protesters in Portland, though he seemed confused about when those protests actually happened.

Now, Chicago is next on his list. But so far, no clear details have been shared about how the operation would work, when it would begin, or how many forces would be deployed.

Trump’s Expanding Power Claims

Trump has often suggested that he has almost unlimited power to use the National Guard in American cities. Last month, he told supporters: “Most people are saying, ‘If you call him a dictator, if he stops crime, he can be whatever he wants.’ I am not a dictator, by the way.” But then he quickly added: “Not that I don’t have—I would—the right to do anything I want to do. I’m the President of the United States. If I think our country is in danger, I can do it.”

His words have made many political leaders nervous, as they see them as signs of authoritarian behavior. Critics believe he is testing the limits of presidential power and trying to use fear and force to control cities that oppose him.

Political Impact

This latest clash between Trump and Illinois leaders is expected to continue for weeks. Governor Pritzker, who is rumored to be considering a run for the presidency in 2028, is using this fight to show his resistance against Trump’s style of leadership. For Trump, the situation gives him more visibility as he pushes his agenda of law and order.

The fight over Chicago is not just about one city. It represents a larger struggle between Trump’s aggressive policies and Democratic leaders who say they are protecting American democracy. While Trump’s supporters see him as strong and decisive, his critics warn that he is leading the country down a dangerous path.
