President-elect Donald Trump has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to delay a law that would ban the TikTok app on January 19 unless it is sold by its Chinese parent company, ByteDance.

Trump wants the court to give him more time after he becomes president on January 20 to try to find a way to solve the problem. He did not say if he thinks the law is right or wrong. The law was passed by Congress earlier this year with support from both political parties.
Trump believes he has the skills to make a deal that would solve the national security problems raised by the government while still letting TikTok continue.
His request came after TikTok and the Biden administration shared their views with the court. The U.S. Justice Department, led by Biden's team, said TikTok's connection to China is a serious national security problem. They claimed the app collects private information from millions of Americans that could be used by China for secret influence.
TikTok argued that Congress has not looked at other ways to deal with the issue and that banning the app should be the last option. The company said that even when national security is important, stopping free speech should not be the first choice.
Trump, who once supported banning TikTok, has recently said nicer things about the app. He said that TikTok helped him get votes from young people in the election and that he feels a “warm spot” for the app.
Earlier, a federal appeals court in Washington agreed with the law, saying that Congress and the president can make decisions about national security. The law is also being challenged by a group of content creators who rely on TikTok for their work.
