U.S. President Donald Trump extended his congratulations to the Artemis II mission crew following their remarkable journey around the Moon. In a satellite call, he commemorated the rare communication with astronauts who ventured beyond low-Earth orbit.
This mission marks a significant milestone, showcasing humanity's return to the Moon for the first time since Apollo 17. The crew traveled approximately 253,000 miles, achieving one of the most distant human space excursions to date. Throughout their journey, they gathered critical scientific data while observing the Moon’s far side.
Echoing his admiration, President Trump referred to the astronauts as “modern-day pioneers,” emphasizing their contributions to deep space discovery and the pride they bring to the United States on an international platform.
Commander Reid Wiseman characterized the journey as unforgettable, revealing that the crew witnessed uncharted sights. Pilot Victor Glover mentioned that even during a communication blackout on the Moon’s far side, they diligently carried out scientific observations and collected invaluable data.
Mission specialist Jeremy Hansen shared insights about the contrasting characteristics of the Moon’s near and far sides, attributing different visible surfaces to Earth’s gravitational influence. Fellow specialist Christina Koch described a poignant moment upon glimpsing Earth again after the blackout, underscoring the vital need for planetary preservation.
President Trump praised the mission's international aspect, particularly recognizing Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen’s contribution. He asserted that this mission exemplifies global collaboration and pride in space endeavors.
The President has invited the Artemis II crew to the White House in recognition of their accomplishments, highlighting the worldwide acknowledgment of their success. This mission represents a pivotal stride towards future lunar landings and sustained human presence beyond Earth.
