Some of President Donald Trump’s advisers are very upset after Israel carried out airstrikes against Hamas leaders in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday morning. Many advisers were particularly frustrated because they did not get a chance to give their opinions or warn the Qataris about the strike beforehand.
Trump himself was informed about the attack only a short time before it began. The information did not come directly from Israel, but from the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Caine, according to a US official. Upon learning this, Trump immediately asked White House special envoy Steve Witkoff to notify the Qatari authorities. Witkoff has a long-standing relationship with Qatar and usually acts as a bridge between the US and the Gulf country.
However, by the time Witkoff managed to contact the Qatari officials, it was already too late. A US official told CNN that the notification could not prevent the strike. To make matters more complicated, Witkoff had met the day before with Ron Dermer, one of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s top advisers. During that meeting, he was not informed about the upcoming strikes.

Trump expressed his displeasure on Tuesday evening, saying: “I’m not thrilled about the whole situation. It’s not a good situation. But I will say this, we want the hostages back, but we are not thrilled about the way that went down.”
He also mentioned that he would give a full statement on Wednesday.
Why Qatar Was Targeted
Hamas leaders have been using Doha, the capital of Qatar, as a base outside of Gaza for many years. The recent strike specifically targeted residential buildings where several members of the Hamas political bureau lived. Qatar’s foreign ministry confirmed that the strike hit these residential areas.
Despite the urgency of the situation, Qatar said it was not warned ahead of time. After White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that Witkoff had been directed to inform the Qataris, Qatar responded that they learned about the strike only as bombs were falling. A senior Qatari official told reporters that by the time they found out, the attacks were already happening, making it impossible to prevent damage or casualties.
Trump Clarifies His Position
Following the attack, Trump updated his statement on Truth Social. He pointed out that the decision to carry out the strike was made solely by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and not by him. He also expressed his frustration that the timing of the attack undermined US efforts in the region.
Trump’s statement reflected a mix of concern for the hostages and anger at being bypassed in major international decisions. This highlights the difficulty he faces in trying to mediate peace in Gaza while keeping a good relationship with Israel and the Gulf countries.
Delicate US Response
The White House’s reaction to the strikes has been careful. Officials aimed to make clear that Trump was not responsible for Israel’s actions while still avoiding any open conflict with Israel. This balancing act shows the complexity of US foreign policy in the Middle East, especially when dealing with powerful allies who make decisions independently.
A Pattern of Surprises
This is not the first time Trump has been caught off guard by Israeli military actions outside Israel. In July, he was surprised when Israel conducted strikes on Syria’s capital, Damascus. Earlier in the summer, Trump expressed anger after Israel attacked a Catholic church in Gaza.
The fact that this latest strike occurred in Qatar adds another layer of tension. Trump was the first sitting US president to visit Qatar in May, where he emphasized the strong military and strategic partnership between the two nations. Qatar has also worked to maintain a close relationship with Trump, even gifting the US a luxury Boeing 747 to serve as Air Force One.
Tensions Between US and Israel
The recent events underline the fragile nature of Trump’s plans to stabilize Gaza and broker peace. They also show the challenges in his relationship with Netanyahu, as well as the difficulty in keeping US allies informed and coordinated. Even with close connections, the US was unable to influence Israel’s actions in advance, causing frustration within the White House.
The Role of Hostages
Trump and his team have made it clear that their priority remains the safety and release of hostages. While the strike targeted Hamas leaders, it also complicated the US’s efforts to secure the hostages’ release. The timing and secrecy of the operation left little room for diplomacy and intervention, which is why Trump emphasized the need to prioritize hostages in his statements.
Lessons for Diplomacy
The strike in Qatar shows how unpredictable military decisions can strain international relationships, even between close allies. It also demonstrates the limits of US influence when other countries take independent actions. For Trump, this incident highlights the challenges of managing multiple priorities—maintaining ties with Gulf nations, supporting Israel, and trying to secure peace in Gaza.
White House Statements
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed the press, saying that Trump had immediately instructed special envoy Witkoff to contact the Qatari officials. Despite this, the timing was too short to prevent the attacks. Qatar officials, however, insisted that they were not informed until the bombs were falling.
This miscommunication reflects the difficulty of real-time diplomacy in crisis situations. It also emphasizes the need for clear communication between the US, its allies, and other countries in the region.
The Israeli strike on Hamas leaders in Qatar has caused significant frustration for President Trump and his advisers. The US was unable to inform Qatar in time, leaving officials surprised and feeling bypassed. While the strike reflects Israel’s independent decision-making, it complicates Trump’s peace efforts and highlights the delicate nature of US alliances in the Middle East. Trump continues to focus on securing the release of hostages while carefully navigating diplomatic relationships with both Israel and Qatar.
The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of international relations and the challenges that come with trying to balance national interests, alliances, and regional stability.
