A devastating incident in northeastern Thailand has led to the deaths of at least 22 individuals and injuries to over 30 more after a crane fell onto a passenger train early Wednesday. Authorities confirmed that the train derailed as a result of the crane collapsing onto one of its carriages.
The tragedy unfolded in Sikhio district, Nakhon Ratchasima province, situated approximately 230 kilometers northeast of Bangkok. The train was en route from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani province when the accident happened.
Local police reported that the crane was part of a high-speed rail construction project positioned near the tracks. Without warning, the crane tipped over, striking a carriage forcefully. This resulted in multiple carriages derailing, and a fire broke out inside a section of the train due to the impact.
Emergency responders, including police, fire crews, and medical teams, swiftly arrived on the scene. Thick plumes of smoke billowed from the wreckage as rescuers fought the flames and searched for those trapped. Firefighters successfully controlled the blaze, preventing it from spreading further across the train.
Rescue operations faced numerous challenges as teams worked for several hours, using heavy tools to navigate through the twisted wreckage and reach trapped passengers. Several injured were rescued and received emergency care on-site before being transported to local hospitals for further treatment.
Social media footage revealed frantic scenes at the accident site, depicting emergency personnel assisting injured passengers while debris littered the tracks. Authorities established a security perimeter to ensure that rescue and recovery efforts could proceed safely.
Authorities verified that all injured individuals had been evacuated and continue to receive medical attention. Rail services along the impacted route were temporarily suspended as officials assessed the damage and cleared the track.
An official investigation is underway to uncover the reason behind the crane's collapse, with authorities examining potential safety violations, mechanical issues, or human error. Further details on the inquiry will be forthcoming.
This tragic event has sparked renewed concerns regarding construction safety protocols near active railway lines, increasing pressure on officials to enforce stricter safety measures on major infrastructure projects.
