In a resplendent celebration of Christmas, Himachal Pradesh has become a magnet for thousands of tourists, drawn by its scenic beauty and the allure of iconic destinations like the Atal Tunnel in Rohtang. Over the extended Christmas weekend, the state witnessed a surge in tourist footfall, with the Atal Tunnel linking Kullu and Lahaul & Spiti emerging as the premier destination.
On a single day, Sunday, an impressive 65,000 individuals in over 12,000 vehicles traversed the 9.2-kilometer Atal Tunnel, setting a remarkable record. As the world's highest single-tube tunnel above 10,000 feet, the Atal Tunnel's engineering marvel attracts adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts alike. The recent heavy snowfall in Rohtang on Saturday added to the region's charm, prompting an influx of tourists eager to experience the winter wonderland.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu extended a warm welcome to the massive influx of tourists, acknowledging their presence in large numbers, which crossed lakhs. The enthusiastic response from tourists marks a significant resurgence for Himachal Pradesh, bouncing back after enduring the brunt of natural disasters during the monsoon season.
During the monsoon, substantial portions of Himachal Pradesh grappled with extensive damage due to heavy rains. Mandi and Kullu districts faced severe destruction during two rain spells, while Shimla and Solan districts bore the brunt of the second spell in August, causing substantial harm to the capital city, Shimla. The revival of tourism in the region is not just a testament to its resilience but also highlights the restorative efforts undertaken to reclaim its allure.
Chief Minister Sukhu commended the district administration and the police for their commendable efforts in managing the influx of tourists efficiently. The challenging conditions, particularly at the north and south portals of the Atal Tunnel, where temperatures plummeted to minus 12 degrees Celsius, required concerted efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of those caught in the snow.
Director General of Police Sanjay Kundu emphasized the importance of safety amid the surge of tourists, urging them to prioritize safe travel practices and adhere to traffic rules. With lakhs of tourists flocking to Himachal Pradesh, responsible travel becomes paramount to ensure a harmonious coexistence between the natural wonders of the region and the visitors seeking to revel in its splendor.
As Himachal Pradesh emerges as a beacon of holiday festivities, the vibrancy of its landscapes and the resilience of its people create an inviting tapestry for travelers seeking a rejuvenating experience amid the mountains. The Christmas celebration in the state not only signifies the joy of the season but also symbolizes a collective triumph over challenges, showcasing the enduring allure of Himachal Pradesh as a cherished destination.
