Dubai, April 17:
At World Art Dubai 2025, where hundreds of artworks from around the world are on display, one installation stands out — not because it is loud or bright, but because it is quiet. A small, still room, hidden in a corner, is stopping people in their tracks. It makes them feel something they can’t quite explain.
The name of the piece is “Longing”, created by well-known visual artist Tejal Patni. The work is simple, but powerful. And more than anything, it feels personal — like it’s speaking directly to the viewer.
Inside the Room: Stillness, Silence, and Thought
The installation shows a small, almost plain room. In it, a real person sits with their back turned, facing empty photo frames on the wall. The room is calm, frozen in time as if nothing has moved for years. The empty frames look like memories, waiting to be remembered.
It’s a “room within a room,” and it makes people feel like they’re stepping inside someone else’s memory. Or maybe their own.
It doesn’t explain anything. It doesn’t need to. Visitors feel what they feel — some sadness, some calm, and a quiet sense of missing something they once had.
From Fashion to Feelings: A New Side of Tejal Patni
Tejal Patni is best known for bold, dramatic work in fashion and photography. He’s been called an Emirates Airlines Game Changer and was one of Adobe’s global anniversary artists. His work usually features sharp visuals, cinematic looks, and high energy.
But Longing is nothing like that.
This is Tejal Patni stripped down — just emotion, space, and silence.
It’s not trying to sell beauty. It’s not even trying to impress.
It’s just… honest.
In recent years, Tejal has explored deeper themes in his exhibitions like Vichitra, shown at Snowball Studios and Art Mumbai. But Longing is different. It feels like something he didn’t create for the world — he created it for himself, and then quietly shared it.
More Than Art — A Mirror
Longing is not really about what’s “missing.”
It’s about what still lives inside us, even when it’s gone.
For people who live far from home, for those who lost someone, or even for those who miss a part of themselves — this piece brings up memories, without using a single word.
It’s not loud. It’s not flashy. But it stays with you.
Longing is not just something you look at.
It’s something you feel.
And if you walk past it without feeling anything — maybe you didn’t really see it at all.
