Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan Makes Major Cabinet Changes
Dar es Salaam, Tanzania — In a significant shake-up of her cabinet, President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania has dismissed two senior ministers, including the influential head of the foreign ministry. The reshuffle comes in the wake of a controversial statement made by the former Minister for Information, Communications, and IT, Nape Nnauye, which has sparked widespread criticism.

Key Changes in the Cabinet:
New Appointments: Mahmoud Thabit Kombo has been appointed as the new Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation. This move replaces January Makamba, whose appointment has been revoked. Additionally, Jerry Silaa, previously the Minister for Lands, Housing, and Settlement Development, will now take over as the Minister for Information, Communications, and IT, succeeding Nape Nnauye.
Controversial Remarks: The reshuffle follows a viral video of Nape Nnauye, in which he remarked, “Winning in elections is not always determined by the number of votes in the ballot box but depends on who counts and announces the results.” This statement has been widely criticized, both by opposition groups and within the ruling party. Critics have argued that his comments hinted at potential electoral misconduct.
Apology and Reactions: Nnauye has since apologized, clarifying that his comments were intended as a joke and taken out of context. Despite his apology, opposition figures, including John Mnyika, have suggested that his remarks might reflect deeper issues within the government and the ruling party. This has led to speculation about possible pre-election strategies and internal power dynamics.
Election Speculations: The timing of this reshuffle is notable, as Tanzania prepares for national elections next year. Analysts, such as University of Dar es Salaam lecturer Abel Kinyondo, view these changes as a strategic maneuver ahead of the 2025 elections. President Hassan, who assumed office in 2021 following the death of John Magufuli, has been steering the country away from Magufuli’s authoritarian policies and has introduced several political reforms, including easing media and opposition restrictions.
Recent Changes: Earlier in July, Hassan had also appointed a new intelligence chief, Suleiman Abubakar Mombo, to replace Ali Idi Siwa, who retired. These moves are seen as part of Hassan’s broader efforts to reshape her administration and position herself for the upcoming electoral challenge.
This cabinet reshuffle marks a pivotal moment in Tanzanian politics as President Hassan continues to navigate her administration’s reform agenda and prepare for the looming elections.
