High-ranking officials from Taiwan and the United States have met recently to deepen their collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI), advanced technologies, drone development, and economic security. This partnership, which began under the Trump administration, underscores the escalating strategic alliance between the two nations, despite their absence of formal diplomatic ties.

The discussions were spearheaded by Jacob Helberg, U.S. Under Secretary for Economic Affairs, alongside Taiwan’s Economy Minister Kung Ming-hsin, currently on a visit to the U.S. Key agreements were signed during this meeting, including the Pax Silica Declaration—a U.S.-initiated effort to safeguard AI and semiconductor supply chains—and a pact aimed at enhancing economic security.

Taiwan, a crucial global hub for semiconductor production vital for AI technologies, is set to play a major role in propelling the AI revolution. Discussions also delved into supply chain security, drone component certifications, and collaborative efforts on critical mineral resources necessary for technology manufacturing.

Officials highlighted strategies to combat economic coercion, enhance cooperation in third countries, and eliminate tax-related obstacles to bolster investments between the U.S. and Taiwan. Taiwan has been advocating for a bilateral agreement to prevent double taxation, a move that could significantly stimulate cross-border investments.

In addition to economic and technological partnership, both parties emphasized that maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is crucial for global economic security and prosperity. Other subjects discussed included the protection of undersea communication cables, advancing low-Earth orbit satellite collaborations, and expanding training programs to cultivate high-tech expertise.

Recently, Taiwan accused China of meddling with undersea telecom and internet cables, a claim Beijing refutes. In response to possible interruptions, Taiwan is increasing its utilization of low-Earth orbit satellites to ensure backup communication systems in case of cable damage.

This enhanced partnership between the U.S. and Taiwan signifies a strategic initiative to bolster cooperation in vital technology sectors and infrastructure security in response to escalating geopolitical challenges.
