Sydney Sweeney’s disappointing streak at the box office continues with her latest film Christy, a biopic based on the life of boxing champion Christy Martin. Released on November 7, the film has registered one of the worst wide-release openings in Hollywood history, raising concerns about its financial viability.

Christy, directed by David Michôd, hit theatres across 2,184 screens in North America. However, despite the wide release, the film earned a mere $1.31 million during its opening weekend, averaging about $600 per theatre over three days. According to Box Office Mojo, this places Christy among the bottom 10 worst openings for a wide release film in North America, excluding re-releases. Many movies released during the pandemic performed better than Christy, which highlights the extent of its underperformance. The previous record for the worst wide-release opening belongs to The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure (2012), which made just $444,000 in its opening weekend.

The international response has also been bleak, with the film earning only around $39,000 outside North America. Its worldwide total after three days stands at a disappointing $1.35 million. Given the reported production budget of over $15 million, Christy appears to be headed for significant losses.

About Christy and Sydney Sweeney’s Role

Christy chronicles the life and struggles of Christy Martin, a pioneering female boxer known for her achievements and tragic fate. Sydney Sweeney underwent a dramatic physical transformation for the role, gaining substantial muscle mass to authentically portray the boxer’s physique. The cast includes notable actors such as Ben Foster, Merritt Weaver, Katy O’Brian, Ethan Embry, and Chad L. Coleman.

Despite these efforts, the film’s poor box office reception suggests it failed to connect with audiences or critics to drive substantial ticket sales.

Sydney Sweeney’s Box Office Woes Continue

Christy marks the fourth consecutive commercial failure for Sydney Sweeney at the box office. Her previous films also struggled financially:

  • Eden (budget: $55 million) earned only $2.5 million.

  • Immaculate and Madame Web both failed to break even, according to industry reports.

This string of box office disappointments raises questions about Sweeney’s current commercial appeal, even as she continues to take on challenging roles.

What’s Next for Sydney Sweeney?

Despite the recent setbacks, Sydney Sweeney has another film lined up — The Housemaid, a psychological thriller directed by Paul Feig, set to release on December 19. Industry watchers will be keen to see if this project reverses her recent box office fortunes.

Christy’s underwhelming debut is a stark reminder of the challenges biopics and sports dramas face in today’s competitive box office environment. While Sydney Sweeney’s commitment to her role was clear, the film’s inability to attract audiences means it will likely be remembered more for its poor box office numbers than its cinematic achievements.
