A UK-based NHS doctor, Dr Amir Khan, has shared important advice about vaginal health. He said that many common beliefs about cleaning the vagina are incorrect. His message is simple: the vagina is a self-cleaning organ and does not need strong or scented products for cleaning.
Dr Khan explained that using scented soaps, wipes, sprays, or special washes can disturb the natural balance of bacteria inside the vagina. This balance protects the body from infections. When scented products are used, they can remove healthy bacteria and lead to problems like itching, irritation, or infections. He advised that warm water is enough for daily cleaning from the outside.
He also clarified that vaginal discharge is normal. Most women experience discharge every day. This is the body’s natural way of keeping the vagina healthy and clean. Discharge only needs attention if its colour, smell, or texture suddenly changes.
Dr Khan also said that every vagina has a natural scent. A natural smell is not a sign of being unhygienic. The vagina is not supposed to smell like perfume or flowers. A sudden strong or unpleasant smell could mean an infection, and in that case, one should talk to a doctor.
Another common myth he addressed is the fear that a tampon can get lost inside the body. Dr Khan explained that the cervix acts like a closed door, so a tampon cannot travel into other parts of the body. Sometimes it may move up slightly, but a doctor can safely remove it if needed.
He concluded by saying that women should trust their bodies. The vagina has been taking care of itself naturally for millions of years. Simple care, clean water, and attention to changes are all that is needed. No fancy products or strong chemicals are required.
This message is important because many women feel pressured by advertisements and social media to use extra products to feel “clean”. But the doctor’s advice reminds us that natural care is usually the healthiest choice.
