Former England captain Ian Botham has voiced his concerns over the team’s limited preparation for the upcoming Ashes series against Australia. He questioned whether England’s players would be ready to face a determined Australian side and the passionate home crowd when the series begins in Perth on November 21.
England’s full squad only arrived in Perth last Sunday, leaving little time to adjust to local conditions. The team will play just one internal practice match before the opening Test. This short preparation period has led Botham to question if England has done enough to get match-ready for the Ashes challenge.
In contrast, most of Australia’s Ashes squad members are already playing red-ball cricket in the Sheffield Shield tournament. The domestic matches have helped them remain in rhythm and adapt to the pitches and weather conditions that will be similar to those during the Test series.
Several England players arrived from New Zealand, where they had been playing white-ball cricket. Botham highlighted that switching from the fast-paced limited-overs format to the patience and technique of Test cricket is not easy. He emphasized that touring teams historically required more time to adjust to Australian conditions.
“It’s not the way I would prepare,” Botham said during a media interaction in Melbourne. He explained that visiting teams must take time to get used to the different light, pitch pace, and weather in Australia. “You have to acclimatize when you come down here. You’ve got to remember there are 24 million people down here, not 11. The ball comes quicker, and the light is different. You’ve got the ‘Fremantle Doctor’ breeze, and all these things matter,” he added.
Botham recalled England’s last Ashes tour in 2021-22, where Joe Root’s team played two internal warm-up matches before losing the series 4-0. He believes Ben Stokes’s side can perform better this time but stressed that avoiding injuries will be crucial. “If England’s bowlers can stay fit and the captain can play a full part, they have a real chance,” Botham said.
The 69-year-old former all-rounder warned that injuries to key bowlers could again disrupt England’s plans. He noted that maintaining fitness has often been a challenge for England during long tours. However, Botham remains optimistic about the team’s potential if all players remain healthy throughout the series.
Botham recommended that England consider using a four-pronged pace attack against Australia, similar to what the West Indies did in 2024. The Caribbean side managed to draw their two-Test series 1-1 against Pat Cummins’s men with an aggressive fast-bowling approach.
“I think it’s the right way,” Botham said about the pace-heavy strategy. “You want to be aggressive. When bowlers attack with pace and bounce, batters who are not in good form often struggle, especially when the ball targets the ribs. It puts pressure on them and changes the momentum,” he explained.
Botham praised Ben Stokes’s leadership and said his presence as both captain and all-rounder could inspire the team. However, he reiterated that consistency and player fitness will decide England’s success. “It’s one of those big ifs,” he said. “But if England’s main bowlers can stay on the field and Stokes leads from the front, they have a genuine chance to challenge Australia.”
The Ashes opener in Perth promises to be an intense contest, with England hoping to reclaim the urn and Australia determined to defend it at home. Botham’s comments have added a spark to the pre-series discussions, reminding fans and players alike that preparation and adaptability are key to winning in Australian conditions.
