Brain health is important for every person because the brain controls our memory, movement, emotions, and daily activities. Many people try to keep their brain healthy by eating good food, exercising, and sleeping well. But according to neurologists, some very simple daily habits can quietly harm the brain without us noticing.
In a recent post, Dr Bing, a neurologist and public health expert, shared three common habits that he personally avoids because they may increase the risk of brain problems in the future. He says that people often think these habits are harmless, but they can slowly damage brain cells and affect memory, sleep, and hearing.
The first habit he warned about is wearing headphones to bed or using them for long hours. When loud music or audio enters the ears for a long time, it can damage small hair cells inside the ear. Once these cells are damaged, they cannot grow back. Over time, this can lead to hearing loss. Research also shows that hearing loss can increase the risk of dementia, a condition where memory and thinking abilities get weaker. Wearing headphones for too long can also trap moisture and bacteria inside the ear, leading to infections. If loud sounds play during sleep, it may disturb deep sleep, which is the time the brain cleans waste and toxins.
The second habit Dr Bing highlighted is ignoring gum health. He said that brushing is not enough. It is important to floss regularly because bacteria in the gums can travel through the bloodstream and affect the brain. Studies have suggested that poor gum health may be linked to memory loss and other brain conditions. Dr Bing shared that he flosses every night to protect both his oral and brain health.
The third habit he mentioned is sitting on the toilet for a long time. Many people take their mobile phones to the bathroom and spend several minutes scrolling. Sitting too long in that position puts pressure on blood vessels. Over time, this can affect blood flow and increase the risk of swelling in veins. Healthy blood flow is important for brain health, and poor circulation can affect brain functioning.
Doctors say that small lifestyle changes can protect the brain in the long term. Listening to music at a low volume, taking short breaks from headphones, cleaning teeth properly, and avoiding long bathroom sitting can help. These steps are simple but can make a big difference as we grow older.
Taking care of the brain every day is important, not just when health problems begin. Good habits today can protect memory and thinking power in the future.
