Geneva, Switzerland: On Saturday, Switzerland inaugurated its new supercomputer, Alps, which stands as one of the world's most powerful computing machines. The ceremony took place at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS) in Lugano, with ETH Zurich University spearheading the event.
Alps, which was ranked as the sixth most powerful supercomputer globally in June, was only partially operational at that time, reaching just 60 percent of its full capacity. The supercomputer was specifically developed to tackle extreme data and computing demands required for advanced scientific research, with a strong focus on artificial intelligence (AI).
Economy, Education, and Research Minister Guy Parmelin highlighted the significance of Alps, describing it as a testament to Switzerland's commitment to progress and knowledge. He emphasized that the supercomputer is a cornerstone of Switzerland's strategic initiative to become the leading hub for transparent and trustworthy AI solutions.

Andreas Krause, the head of the AI Centre at ETH Zurich, stated that Alps enables the training of complex AI models crucial for various applications, including medicine and climate research. The supercomputer's advanced capabilities are already being utilized by MeteoSwiss, the national weather service, which uses it to develop a high-resolution weather prediction model tailored to Switzerland's intricate mountain and valley topography.
Parmelin shared his enthusiasm on social media, noting that Alps would "open new horizons, clearing the path for the future and positioning Switzerland at the forefront of scientific research." CSCS deputy director Michele De Lorenzi provided a striking comparison, explaining that the supercomputer can perform in a single day what would take a commercial laptop 40,000 years to achieve.
The Alps supercomputer is housed in 33 cabinets covering 116 square meters, underscoring its vast scale and technological sophistication
